Shop.app — also written simply as Shop in the App Store and Google Play — is a free mobile shopping companion published by Shopify Inc. It bundles three different jobs into one application: a Shopify-powered marketplace, a fast checkout wallet called Shop Pay, and a universal parcel tracker. You can use any one of those features without using the others.

Who builds Shop.app?

Shop is published by Shopify, the Canadian commerce platform headquartered in Ottawa. Shopify itself doesn't sell physical products — it provides the storefront, checkout, and payments infrastructure that more than 1.7 million merchants run their online stores on. The Shop app is, in effect, the consumer-facing layer of that infrastructure: instead of shoppers visiting hundreds of independent Shopify stores in a browser, Shop pulls those experiences into a single mobile app.

What you can actually do inside the app

  • Browse a curated marketplace. Shop highlights independent brands across fashion, beauty, home goods, electronics, and consumables. You can follow stores, save products, and discover sales without leaving the app.
  • Check out with Shop Pay. Once you save your card and shipping details, paying at any Shopify-powered storefront becomes a single biometric tap — no card typing.
  • Track every package. Even orders placed outside the Shopify network can appear in Shop's tracking inbox if you forward shipping confirmations or connect your email account.
  • Manage post-purchase events. Returns, reorder shortcuts, and delivery confirmations live in one place, so you don't bounce between merchant emails and carrier websites.

What Shop.app is not

Shop is a discovery and checkout tool — not a marketplace operator in the Amazon sense. Shopify does not own the inventory, set the prices, or fulfill the orders. Each transaction in Shop is still a contract between you and the individual merchant, and that distinction matters when something goes wrong: refunds, returns, and disputes are routed back to the seller, not to Shopify directly.

Quick fact

Shop Pay was launched in 2017 as Shopify Pay, rebranded to Shop Pay in 2020, and became the foundation of the standalone Shop app the same year.

Who Shop.app is best suited for

If you regularly buy from independent direct-to-consumer brands — the kind of merchants who sell through their own branded sites rather than third-party marketplaces — Shop is genuinely useful. It removes friction from a kind of shopping that has historically meant typing your card into dozens of unfamiliar checkout pages. For shoppers who buy almost exclusively from Amazon or eBay, the marketplace and checkout features are mostly redundant; the tracking inbox is the part most likely to add value.

How this site reviews it

Shop.app Review Hub is an independent editorial project. We do not run sponsored reviews, and we do not earn commissions on Shop Pay transactions. Our methodology is straightforward: install the public app, use it for normal everyday purchases, document what works and what doesn't, and cross-check claims against Shopify's published documentation and reputable third-party reporting. Every page on this site is updated when material changes ship to the app.
